SWEET AUBURN

Sweet Auburn was once the corrior of black wealth, culture and power in Atlanta. Today, it is a shell of its former self, thanks to the history of racist transportation policies and the ongoing threat of gentrification. The most savage inequalities fester in the shadows of Martin Luther King's birthplace, the King Center and Ebenezer Baptist Church. Even so, Sweet Auburn continues to have significant symbolic power as a site of black historical memory, as was attested by the Juneteenth 2024 march I photographed.
