I took these photos at the Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter in downtown Atlanta in 2010 and 2011. This was the largest men's shelter in the Southeast U.S. and could accommodate up to 1,000 people. African Americans made up the overwhelming majority of those who used its services. Peachtree-Pine was at the center of a fierce political battle with city government and downtown business interests from its opening in 1998 until it was finally forced to shut down in 2017.
